It’s January – the time for fresh starts, new goals and bold dreams. And if your goal for this year is to build public speaking confidence, then this post is for you.
One thing many people don’t realize is that becoming a confident speaker doesn’t require perfection or overwhelming effort. The secret lies in taking small, intentional steps. With each one, you’ll feel the progress build, transforming not just your speaking skills but your overall self.
To make your first step easier, I’ve created The Balanced Speaker’s Guide to Confidence – a free, practical resource to help you get started.
But before we dive into that, let’s talk about what holds us back and how small, consistent actions can unlock your potential.
Why We Struggle to Make Progress
We all have dreams – big or small. But too often, they feel out of reach. Why?
- We Overestimate the Time Required: Many of us think we need to dedicate hours to see meaningful progress, leading to procrastination or burnout.
- We Underestimate Small Actions: Behavioral science tells us that small, consistent actions compound into remarkable results over time.
- We Lack a Clear, Doable Plan: Without manageable steps, even the most exciting goals can feel overwhelming.
The result? Too often, we let another year pass without taking meaningful steps toward our dreams. Sounds familiar?
How Small Steps and Support Changed Everything for Me
Last year, I faced a challenge that felt overwhelming. I had been asked to be the Master of Ceremonies for a wedding in France, and the entire ceremony needed to be delivered in French – a language I didn’t speak.
It wasn’t just the task that intimidated me; it was the fear of failing on the most important moment of my friends’ life who had entrusted me to host their big day. I knew I had to start small, building my skills step by step.
At the same time, my best friend Alex had a goal of his own: to lose weight and rebuild his confidence on his appearance. We both knew how challenging these goals could be, so we made a pact to support each other every step of the way.
For me, the steps started with learning basic French vocabulary and practicing simple sentences. Over time, those small steps built into full rehearsals of the ceremony.
For Alex, the steps began with signing up at the gym and making small dietary changes – small commitments he could stick to daily.
The Breakthroughs That Followed
By the time the wedding day arrived, I had achieved something I once thought impossible: I hosted the entire ceremony confidently in French. Every speech, every announcement, every moment was fully in French.
Through dedication and consistent practice, I learned not only to speak the language but to deliver it with humor and charm. I connected with the audience, honored my friends in their native language, and – most importantly – had so much fun doing it!
For Alex, his small, consistent steps toward health led to a total lifestyle transformation. His short workouts evolved into a regular gym routine (even though he still complains every day about it). His eating habits improved and he even started new hobbies like learning how to dance salsa and bachata.
But the real magic? Those shared daily updates – encouraging each other, celebrating wins, and staying accountable – helped us both achieve more than we thought possible. Along the way, what started as a friendship turned into something much deeper.
By the end of the year, I had not only learned a new language but I had also found love. Alex and I became a couple, and our journey together began – one small step at a time.
